The ‘Wellbeing Summit’ would aim to achieve greater regional trade integration in response to the resurgence of protectionism.
On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed holding a “Summit for the Economic Wellbeing of Latin America” in Tegucigalpa, where the 9th Presidential Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was held.

“The proposal must be developed jointly with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, the new president of CELAC. But it was very well received by all the presidents,” she said during her morning press conference on Thursday.
During her stay in Honduras, Sheinbaum stated that the Wellbeing Summit would aim to achieve greater regional trade integration in response to the resurgence of protectionism in the United States. Her proposal also seeks to revitalize CELAC, a “community that is essential” for Mexico, a country looking to expand its relations with South America and the Caribbean.
“Our goal is the wellbeing of the Mexican people, but also the wellbeing of Latin America and the Caribbean. That’s why I propose holding a summit where we can discuss the complementarities we share and how we can expand the economic relationship between Mexico and Latin American countries,” she said.
In light of the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, Sheinbaum reaffirmed that Mexico is interested in continuing economic integration with the United States.
As Latin America’s economic strengths, Sheinbaum listed the presence of 663 million young people, a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$6.6 trillion, and net food exports.
She also mentioned that Latin America holds more than 30% of the planet’s primary forests, one-third of its freshwater, nearly 20% of global oil reserves, and at least 25% of strategic minerals.
“What region should we be focusing on? What region is closest to us in cultural, historical, and geographical terms? It’s Latin America and the Caribbean,” Sheinbaum pointed out.
